This summer's exhibition of bicycle design is drawn from the collection of Michael Embacher. His collection of more than 200 bikes has been documented in both a book and an iPad app. Don't miss this opportunity to hear him speak about his collection and the evolution of bicycle design, including a look at the creative, rare, offbeat, and even unsuccessful models that led to the creation of his collection. Embacher will deliver Cyclepedia's opening lecture on June 8 at 2 p.m., in a presentation that is sure to sell out. Get your tickets today!
Thanks to all those who attended the Museum’s first ever New for the Wall event, the Museum will be adding three new works to the permanent collection: Itō Jakuchū’s Carp Ascending a Waterfall, Albrecht Dürer’s Madonna Crowned by Two Angels, and Irving Penn’s Marcel Duchamp. The Japanese painting Carp Ascending a Waterfall was purchased outright and given as a gift to the Museum by Mia Hervin Moore in honor of her mother Maria Hervin, who was a member of the Asian Art Council; the other two works will be purchased with the proceeds from the event.
The Portland Art Museum recently received a $171,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize its collection of Northwest art. The Museum has more than 7,000 works by artists living and working in the region. This grant will allow the Museum to share images and information about this important collection throughout the region and around the world.
